Corpus Christi

Dear Parishioners and Visitors,

Blessings of Corpus Christi Sunday!

What an amazing gift we receive each time we   attend Mass, when we receive Jesus in the Eucharist, when we adore him in the Blessed Sacrament during adoration, and when we visit him in the tabernacles of our churches. Christ has      become our true food and true drink.  He has done this not only to be close to us, to nourish and transform us, but also to help us remember what he has done for us.  We recall in this sacred meal our Lord’s amazing love for us and how he rescued us from darkness, sin, and death.  Again and again, he comes to us under the appearances of bread and wine.  He unites himself to us as we receive him in the Most Blessed Sacrament, the “true Bread from Heaven.”

With prayerful best wishes,

Fr. John Mahoney

Faith Formation Update

Faith Formation classes have wrapped up for 2023-24! Ollie, Nolan, and Max have completed their formal lessons but will continue to contribute to our Mass Ministries on the weekends. They did most of their learning with their families at home this year. We met once a month to review and discuss their assignments and to catch up with one another. They have done a great job!

Raylynne received Confirmation and First Holy Communion this year. She worked very hard on her lessons, performed spiritual and corporal works of mercy, went on retreat, and went to confession to get ready for the sacraments. We are very proud of her!

Daevanie, Camille, and George faithfully attended classes, enjoyed lots of snacks, and learned a lot about our faith and how we can live to be more like Jesus. They also did a great job!

In addition to classes and lessons, the students and their families got together to create family Advent calendars, made a Lenten craft, attended Ash Wednesday Mass, led the Children’s Stations of the Cross,   visited the Ice Castles, and made Easter goodie bags to distribute at the Easter Masses. Now and then the students would invite their younger siblings to join us for classes and special events. They are becoming young evangelists already!

On June 16, the families will gather one more time to celebrate our year and just have fun with each other!! Our plan is to play some mini-golf at Hobo Hills and enjoy some pizza and ice cream.

Thank you to everyone who supported the children in their year of Faith Formation. We look forward to next year when we continue on our journey! God Bless and have a great summer!!

Crown on Our Lady of Fatima

Dear Parishioners and  Visitors,

When visiting with us at St. Joseph’s Church, have you ever noticed how often people pray and light candles at the statue of Our Lady of Fatima? As May, Mary’s month, draws to a close, here’s something interesting about the rich and special history of the famous crown worn by Mary at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal.

It was crafted in 1942 by the Portuguese royalty’s own jewelers. Its materials were donated from the jewelry boxes of women throughout Portugal who donated gold and jewels to honor Our Lady of Fatima for her protection during the Second World War. Nearly 3,000 pearls and precious stones encrust the crown.

One gem, however, far outranks all the diamonds, rubies, and emeralds. With its dull, dark gray coloring and a simple almond shape, this gem doesn’t look like much – because it’s not a gemstone at all. It’s the bullet that struck Pope St. John Paul II. One year after the attempt on his life – May 13, 1981 – the Holy Father went to Fatima bearing the bullet as a gift for the Blessed Mother. Uncertain what to do with this unique token, the rector of the Shrine went to the statue of Our Lady of Fatima and examined her crown. At the top, there was an empty space that just so happened to be the exact circumference of the bullet! It is set now as a permanent part of the treasured crown.

Pray for us, O    Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ!

With prayerful best wishes,

Fr. John Mahoney
