Join Pope Francis in a Marathon of Prayer

Pray the Rosary on Monday, May 17 as we appeal for divine assistance to bring an end to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception has been chosen by the Holy See to lead the worldwide recitation of the Rosary on Monday, May 17, at 12 noon ET/6pm Rome time, in response to Pope Francis’ call for a “marathon” of prayer during the month of May “to ask for the end of the pandemic.”

Cardinal Wilton Gregory, Archbishop of Washington and Chairman of the National Shrine Board of Trustees, will prayerfully lead the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary from the Basilica’s Great Upper Church.

With the ability to accommodate 1,000 people socially distanced in the Great Upper Church with other safety protocols in place, the event is open to the public and the faithful are encouraged to join this vital prayer effort in person by registering at www.nationalshrine.org/mass-registration.

For those unable to attend in person, the recitation of the Rosary will be livestreamed at www.nationalshrine.org/mass and will be shared with the Holy See for transmission throughout the world.

May is the Month of Mary!

As the Mother of God, the Virgin Mary has a unique position among the saints, indeed, among all creatures. She is exalted, yet still one of us.

Redeemed by reason of the merits of her Son and united to Him by a close and indissoluble tie, she is endowed with the high office and dignity of being the Mother of the Son of God, by which account she is also the beloved daughter of the Father and the temple of the Holy Spirit. Because of this gift of sublime grace she far surpasses all creatures, both in heaven and on earth. At the same time, however, because she belongs to the offspring of Adam she is one with all those who are to be saved. (Lumen Gentium, no. 53)

Mary embraces God’s will and freely chooses to cooperate with God’s grace, thereby fulfilling a crucial role in God’s plan of salvation. Throughout the centuries, the Church has turned to the Blessed Virgin in order to come closer to Christ. Many forms of piety toward the Mother of God developed that help bring us closer to her Son. In these devotions to Mary, “while the Mother is honored, the Son, through whom all things have their being and in whom it has pleased the Father that all fullness should dwell, is rightly known, loved and glorified and . . . all His commands are observed.” The Church honors her as the Mother of God, looks to her as a model of perfect discipleship, and asks for her prayers to God on our behalf.

Pope’s Rosary Relay

On May 1, Pope Francis will launch a 30 day Rosary Relay for an end to the pandemic. The Pope will lead the Rosary May 1 and May 31. Throughout the month, the daily Rosary will be led from various Marian churches and shrines throughout the world. The broadcast will be at 12 noon Eastern Time. In order to provide the opportunity to pray with others around the world during May, the Regina Caeli and the Angelus (after Pentecost, May 23) will be prayed on Teams at 11:50 am.
